The pictures of the ice café will take you by surprise, as it is unbelievable to know that on Leh-Manali National Highway, there exists this unique Ice Cafe -a restaurant built inside a massive Ice Stupa in Gya Meeru village of Ladakh that is grabbing eyeballs thousands of tourists, llocalitiesand visitors this season.
According to a media report this beautiful cafe has been constructed by Border Road Organisation officials along with three local youths-Jigmet Tundup, Nawang Punchok and Sonam Chosdup, who were inspired much by the Rolex Awardee Sonam Wangchuk’s concept of conserving the winter water in form of artificial glacier that was built in a shape of cone named as ‘Ice Stupa’.
This distinctly made cafe was created by making the water to fall on cone-shaped net structure from a certain height and once the water started freezing on the net, more water was added to enhance the thickness and size of the cone structure so that it somehow gave the impression of a Buddhist stupa and enough space could be created to serve food to the tourists inside it.
Of course, ice doesn’t last. Talking about how long can it be maintained, It is expected that this unique cafe will survive until mid-May. In an interview to Economic Times, one of the members said that they felt the requirement of building a restaurant as visitors coming to see the Ice Stupa ask for some hot tea, coffee or noodles so they decided to build Ice Cafe inside their Ice Stupa and got a great response from all.
Also, according to sources, once these stupas will start melting down in mid-May, the water will be collected in tanks and will be used to water the planted land, using a drip irrigation system in the Ladakh region of J&K. Indeed a great move!
