In the pursuit to eradicate the sanskari portrayal of women in the local train's ladies coach, the Western railways have made an effort to modify the logo to impart a 'new age' looking working ladies. The woman in the new logo wears office formals as against the old one which showed a woman wearing a ghunghat and bindi.
According to a Mid day report, the officials of the railway are going to put up posters of inspiring women like astronaut Kalpana Chawla, cricketer Maithili Raj and Badminton player Saina Nehwal inside the coaches.12 coaches have been decked up with the new logo while another two are expected to roll out in a few weeks, as the report states.
WR General Manager AK Gupta thought the signage on the trains needed to be modified to go along with the suits of the modern age. It was when they were discussing the same, they realized that the picture of the woman in a saree did not accurately reflect the woman of today.
“The idea was to adopt an icon that will do justice and represent today’s women in this city, who are independent and successful," Chief PRO of WR, Ravindra Bhakar told Mumbai Mirror. The report states that the internal team focused upon the suit and alms folded design because 'it reflected the confidence of the modern Indian woman.'
Also, there’s this new twist, the new logo is larger than the old one to make commuters aware that these aren’t general apartments but, ladies. But even after this measure, there are some who feel that Western Railway need to turn their focus on more sensitive issues that affect women. And I guess they aren’t wrong.
