Celebrities live a majority of their lives in the public eye and often remain in the spotlight even years after their demise. Over the decades that have gone by, there have been many sudden deaths that shook the entire nation. Here's taking a look at Bollywood celebrities who passed away under mysterious circumstances:
February 24, 2018, will certainly be marked as a black day in the history of Indian cinema. Actress Sridevi, who is often hailed as India's first female superstar breathed her last on the night of February 24. She was found unconscious in her bathtub, in Dubai, by her husband Boney Kapoor. Soon, speculations were rife about the cause. The post-mortem revealed that the death was caused due to "accidental drowning". However, what exactly happened on the fateful evening would always remain a mystery. After some investigation, Sridevi's mortal remains were flown into Mumbai from Dubai on February 27, and a state funeral was held on February 28. The late actress is survived by her husband Boney Kapoor and daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor.
She was the iconic Indian actress with unconventional western looks and a Bohemian spirit. Yes, we're talking about none other than the first sex symbol of Bollywood, Parveen Babi. Her career brought her runaway success. But her personal life was in shambles. She was mentally fragile and it is believed that Parveen suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. Rumour mills claim that Parveen’s mental disorder was due to her alcoholism which resulted out of her failed relationships. Battling a lonely life, Parveen passed away in 2005 and the fact that her body was discovered only a few days after she died, left everyone pondering over how she actually died. Babi was found lying on the bed after the door of her terrace flat was broken open by a police team following a complaint from the manager of her housing society that newspaper and milk packets had been piling up at her door for three days.
Bollywood witnessed a dramatic transformation during the early '90s. It started with a promising beginning of another decade with a gush of surprises and talents emerging within the industry. One such gifted talent was the teenaged Divya Bharti. The young girl, who was often referred to as Sridevi's lookalike won millions of hearts with her chirpy performances and sprightly innocence. However, destiny had its own ways of playing with the angel. It was the fateful night of April 5, 1993, when the country lost Divya in a sudden turn of events. There were numerous speculations by the media regarding Divya's sudden demise, including the possibility of accidental death, suicide and even murder. Reportedly, the actress fell to death from the fifth floor of her apartment in Versova, Mumbai. Her body was released on 7 April 1993 and the funeral took place the same day. Divya was allegedly married to producer Sajid Nadiadwala. Police closed the investigation into her death in 1998, but the circumstances of her death still remain murky.
The South Film industry is known for its bold yet glamorous divas who have rocked the Indian Cinema for decades. One name that comes out of the rubbles is that of Silk Smitha (Vijayalakshmi Vadlapati). It has been more than 20 years since Silk Smitha committed suicide, but till date, no one knows why the actress took the extreme step. Smitha was found dead at her Chennai apartment on September 23, 1996. Though no one knows the exact reason, it is believed that she was battling multiple problems, including financial crunch, disillusionment in love and severe depression. Bollywood actress Vidya Balan even went on to do the film 'The Dirty Picture' (2011), inspired by the life of Silk Smitha
Guru Dutt, who was part of classics such as 'Pyaasa', 'Kaagaz Ke Phool', 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam' and 'Chaudhvin Ka Chand', was found dead on his bed in his rented apartment at Pedder Road in Mumbai on October 10, 1964. He is said to have been taking alcohol mixed with sleeping pills. But it is still unknown whether his death was suicide or accidental. Interestingly he was in a very happy mood the previous day and had shown no signs of depression. He was only 39 when he died. But in a short span of a 13-year film career, Guru Dutt is considered to be one of the very few artists to have achieved tremendously in the Hindi film industry.
